Derby County have signed former Norwich City defender Shane Duffy on a short-term two-month deal. The 34-year-old centre-back joins as a free agent to address a defensive injury crisis at Pride Park.
Shane Duffy, who made 91 appearances and scored five goals for Norwich over three seasons, had been training with Derby for the last two weeks. He departed Carrow Road at the end of the 2023/24 season after his contract expired and has been without a club since. Derby, currently 23rd in the Championship with just one win from their opening 12 games, have six first-team defenders sidelined, including three centre-backs.
Eustace adds experience
Manager John Eustace has moved to bring in the experienced Irish international as his second defensive recruit in recent weeks, following the arrival of Jack Robinson. Duffy, who has 61 caps for the Republic of Ireland, is expected to make his debut in Saturday's match away to Millwall. Derby lost 1-0 on their last visit to The Den and have not beaten Millwall since 2020.
Duffy's arrival comes ahead of a quick reunion with his former club, as Derby are due to host Norwich City next week. Norwich, who sit 20th in the Championship on 12 points, face Watford at home this weekend. Their recent form shows just one win in their last five league outings, a 3-1 victory over Charlton last Friday.
A logical departure
Duffy's exit from Norwich was framed as a natural progression for the club. Philippe Clement, discussing the decision earlier this year, pointed to the emergence of younger defensive options. "It has to do also with the evolution of other players," Clement said. "So Ruairi stepped up big time this season. Jose (Cordoba) was really constantly performing well. Harry (Darling) also stepped up the last couple of months."
Clement added his respect for the departing defender. "I've been in that moment of my career, also in the past."
Duffy, who joined Norwich on a free transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023, helped the club reach the Championship play-offs in his first season. He now becomes the tenth club of a career that has also included spells at Fulham, Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Celtic and Burnley. His immediate task is to shore up a Derby defence that has been conceding regularly this term, with the short-term pact offering a chance to prove his worth ahead of the January window.
