Injury-Ravaged Back Four
Cardiff City face a serious defensive shortage ahead of their EFL Cup second-round match against Norwich City on Tuesday at 19:00 GMT. Senior centre-backs Dylan Lawlor, Calum Chambers, Will Fish and Gabriel Osho are all out injured, leaving the club with only a handful of fit defenders.
In the previous match at Derby County, Barry-Murphy had to improvise, playing right-back Perry Ng and left-back Joel Bagan in central defence. Ronan Kpakio and Calum Scanlon were the starting full-backs, while 15-year-old Noah Anyadike was the only defensive name on the bench.
"We treat every game with the intention of winning and that won't change," Barry-Murphy said. "With regard to Tuesday, with the players who have been doing all the training and all the playing - the back four we played at Derby are the only ones we have doing all the training and all the playing at the club - we have to be mindful of not pushing too far, too soon in the season."
Relying on Youth and Depth
Barry-Murphy may also look to the under-21 squad for additional backup, as he seeks to preserve his frontline options for the upcoming Championship clash with Sheffield United. Calum Scanlon, who returned on a second loan spell from Liverpool, played 80 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Wrexham on Monday and then completed a full 90 minutes against Derby.
"It was Calum's first 90 minutes in two-and-a-half years so we have to be careful of exposing players like that again," Barry-Murphy added. "But we haven't got many options at the moment."
Other defenders who could start against Norwich include Joel Colwill, David Turnbull, Isaak Davies and Callum Robinson, all of whom were on the bench in the match against Swindon Town, where Yousef Salech scored twice in a 3-2 victory.
Looking Ahead
Jack Moylan suffered a dead leg in the Derby game, but the club remains optimistic he will not miss the match. Barry-Murphy’s focus is on protecting the squad’s fitness early in the season while still fielding a competitive side.
Cardiff’s last season’s best cup run saw them reach the quarter-finals, a record that stands as their deepest progress since the 2012 final loss to Liverpool. The upcoming tie against Norwich City will test the depth of their defensive resources and the manager’s ability to balance ambition with caution.
The match is scheduled for Tuesday 19:00 GMT at Pride Park, with Cardiff hoping to secure a win and maintain momentum in both cup and league competitions.
