Norwich City legend Teemu Pukki has announced his retirement from professional football. The 36-year-old striker confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, bringing an end to a 16-year career that cemented his status as a Carrow Road icon.
Pukki joined the Canaries on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 and made an immediate impact. He scored 29 goals in his debut season, powering the club to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. Over five years in Norfolk, he netted 88 times in 210 appearances and lifted the Championship trophy on two separate occasions.
His individual accolades were just as impressive. Pukki was named the EFL Championship Player of the Season in both 2018/19 and 2022/23, and he earned a Premier League Player of the Month award in September 2019. He also became Finland's all-time leading goalscorer with 43 international goals.
A lasting legacy
Fans will remember his stunning hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Newcastle United and his two goals in a 3-0 derby victory over Ipswich Town. "The time has come for me to say farewell to professional football after this season," Pukki said in a statement.
His retirement comes as the current Norwich side, sitting 21st in the Championship on nine points from 11 games, seeks to rediscover its scoring touch. The team has lost its last five matches, including a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth last Friday, and has scored 17 goals this season. The Canaries have conceded 21 goals, with the decisive moment often coming late; 12 of those goals have been scored against them in the final stages of matches. They will look to end this poor run in their next fixture away at Charlton on Saturday 24 October. The team's recent form of five consecutive defeats includes losses to Portsmouth, Southampton, Swansea, Bolton, and Manchester City. They are 14 points behind the league leaders, Swansea. The current top scorer for the club is M. Touré with five goals in seven appearances.
Pukki's departure from the professional game leaves a void, but his legacy of clinical finishing and consistent excellence remains. He played his final club matches for HJK Helsinki in the Finnish Veikkausliiga before hanging up his boots.
