Norwich City's worrying form continued with a fourth straight Championship defeat, a 1-0 loss to Southampton at Carrow Road on Wednesday. Kuryu Matsuki's 54th-minute strike was enough to give the visitors their first away win of the campaign and leave Norwich hovering just above the relegation zone in 20th place.

Philippe Clement was forced into a change in goal, handing a league debut to Daniel Grimshaw with Vladan Kovacevic injured. The hosts started brightly, with Oscar Schwartau firing just over the bar after only four minutes following a pass from Anis Ben Slimane. Grimshaw was rarely troubled in the first half, which saw Southampton's Ryan Manning and Zach Abbott both booked, leading to their half-time substitutions.

Matsuki makes the difference

The game's decisive moment arrived nine minutes after the restart. Samuel Edozie provided the assist for Japanese midfielder Kuryu Matsuki, who found the net to put Southampton ahead. Norwich pushed for an equaliser, with Mathias Kvistgaarden and Jacob Wright both forcing saves from Saints keeper Daniel Peretz. Lewis Dobbin then made a key goal-line block to deny Jose Cordoba a certain goal.

Clement made five second-half changes, introducing Anthony Musaba among others, but his side could not find a breakthrough. "I certainly thought we deserved at least a point, the guys gave everything out there, working hard all the way through," the Norwich manager said afterwards. His opposite number, Tonda Eckert, was pleased with his team's resilience, stating, "Tonight we have put in another good performance and on this occasion we have got our reward."

The result extends a dismal run for the Canaries, who have now lost their last five league matches. They sit 20th in the Championship with just nine points from ten games, having conceded 20 goals already this season. The team's goal difference now stands at a concerning minus 11. Attention now turns to a key home fixture against Portsmouth this Saturday. With several players still sidelined, including top scorer Moussa Toure, Clement will need to find a solution quickly to halt this slide. A positive result is essential to lift the mood around Carrow Road and start climbing away from danger.
