Norwich City academy coach Adem Atay has departed the club to become Kieron Dyer's assistant head coach at Southend United. Atay reunites with the former England international in the dug-out, having coached alongside him during their respective spells within Ipswich Town's youth set-up.
What happened?
Atay joined Norwich in the summer of 2024 after a spell at Aston Villa, arriving as an under-18s coach to work alongside Greg Crane. He initially served as a professional development phase coach for the under-15 and under-16 age groups before being succeeded in that role by former City striker Simeon Jackson.
Why it matters for Norwich City
Atay turned down opportunities higher up the pyramid in order to link up with Dyer again, following the former Ipswich midfielder’s first move into management after a spell on Paul Cook’s coaching staff at Chesterfield. That relationship has been central to Atay’s decision to leave Norwich and make his own first step into senior coaching.
What comes next?
Dyer believes persuading Atay to swap City’s academy for his Southend project is a major coup as he plots a route back into the EFL for the non-league club. “I’m really pleased to have Adem onboard,” Dyer commented on the appointment. “I’ve worked closely with him in the past and he understands how I want the game to be coached and played.”
