Norwich City Under-21s were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Stoke City Under-21s in their Premier League 2 home opener this week. Alan Neilson's side dominated the rainy fixture at the Avant Training Centre but could not find a breakthrough, settling for a point after their opening day win at Middlesbrough.
The game was largely one-way traffic from the start. Norwich's first chance came after just three minutes when Luke Towler had a shot blocked following an Elliot Myles corner. Myles then tested Stoke goalkeeper Noah Cooper with a curling effort. Stoke's first sight of goal arrived midway through the first half, with Caleb Ansen saving well from Adriel Walker after a Thomas Midwood through ball.
Norwich continued to press. On 27 minutes, Gabriel Forsyth marked his long-awaited return to competitive football with a low, curling effort that Cooper tipped wide. Sonny Rowland then forced another save from a corner before Errol Mundle-Smith beat defender Jaden Mears and saw his shot saved just before the break. Vatan Özcan provided the assist for that chance.
Neilson made two changes at the interval, introducing Botan Ameen and Toby Chilvers. The pressure continued. Rio Mundle's cross was clawed away by Cooper on 50 minutes. A corner from Alan Domeracki caused chaos in the Stoke box on 70 minutes, with captain Theo Adelusi firing over from the penalty spot via a deflection.
The best opportunity came on 75 minutes. Ameen whipped in a cross, Finlay Corke stretched at the front post, and the ball fell to Chilvers who hit the crossbar from close range. Luke Towler's follow-up was brilliantly clawed away by Cooper. In added time, substitute Reuben Cooper fired narrowly wide from an Elliot Myles cross.
The starting XI included three players with first-team experience: Elliot Myles and Errol Mundle-Smith on the flanks, and Gabriel Forsyth in the number 10 role. The full matchday squad was Caleb Ansen, Rio Mundle, Vatan Özcan, Theo Adelusi (captain), Sonny Rowland, Alan Domeracki, Elliot Myles, Luke Towler, Finlay Corke, Gabriel Forsyth, and Errol Mundle-Smith.
Substitutes Botan Ameen, Toby Chilvers, Reuben Cooper, and Chukwu were all used. Trialist, Williams, and Gwanzura remained unused. The senior Norwich City side finished 9th in the Championship last season with 65 points from 46 games, scoring 63 goals and conceding 56.
The senior team's next fixture is a Championship away match against Stoke City on 1st September. Stoke finished 17th in the table last term. Norwich will be without several players for that clash, with Ali Ahmed, Jovon Makama, Lucien Mahovo, Mirko Topić, and Paris Maghoma currently sidelined.
This result leaves the Under-21s with four points from their first two Premier League 2 matches. The focus now shifts to integrating returning players like Forsyth and maintaining momentum. The senior squad's preparations continue for their upcoming league campaign, where they aim to improve on last season's mid-table finish.
