Norwich City fans will benefit from an extra train service following the midweek Championship fixture against Birmingham City. Greater Anglia has announced it will run an additional late-night train from Norwich to London Liverpool Street after the match at Carrow Road on Wednesday, September 9.
The Canaries, currently 12th in the Championship with six points from five games, host a Birmingham side sitting 10th. The extra transport provision aims to help supporters travel home more easily after the 8pm kick-off. This news comes as David Wagner's squad looks to build on a mixed start to the season, having scored and conceded eight goals for a zero goal difference.
The additional service will depart Norwich station at 10.27pm. It is scheduled to arrive at London Liverpool Street at 12.30am the following morning. The train will make stops at Diss, Stowmarket, Ipswich, Manningtree, Colchester, Witham, Chelmsford, Shenfield, and Stratford along the route.
Passengers are advised to purchase tickets in advance online or via the Greater Anglia app. Those travelling in groups of three or more can take advantage of GroupSave discounts for further savings. James Reeve, group station manager at Greater Anglia, explained the decision was driven by fan demand. "We know this match is very important to our customers, which is why we are running this additional train," Reeve said. He noted the operator worked directly with the football club to identify the need, calling the service "a direct result of that partnership working."
Reeve added that supporting large local events and encouraging sustainable travel are key priorities. "We always want to support large local events where possible and make it easy for people to travel to by train so they can leave the car at home," he stated.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve matchday travel options for Norwich City supporters. Mobilityways, a transport consultancy, has been working with Norfolk County Council, the club, and operators on this project. Lewis Buck, senior account manager at Mobilityways, said they provided travel survey and postcode analysis to the partnership. "We are really pleased to see improvements like this from Greater Anglia that benefit fans," Buck commented.
Lauren Blyth, head of CSR at Norwich City, emphasized the importance of reliable transport for the fan experience. "We know that reliable and accessible transport is an important part of the matchday experience for our supporters," Blyth said. She called the extra train "a positive step that will help more fans travel to and from Carrow Road sustainably and with greater convenience."
