Norwich City legend Hugh Curran has died at the age of 82. The Scottish striker, a prolific scorer for the Canaries in the late 1960s, passed away this week.

Curran joined Norwich in January 1966 for a £12,000 fee, signed by then-manager Ron Ashman from Millwall. He quickly became a key figure, netting 53 times in 124 appearances for the club in the old Division Two. His standout campaign came in 1968 when he was named Norwich City's player of the season.

One of his most celebrated performances came in the 1968-69 League Cup. Curran scored a hat-trick against arch-rivals Ipswich Town at Portman Road, leading Norwich to a 4-2 second-round victory. Reflecting on his time at Carrow Road, Curran once said, "It was one of the happiest times I had in my football career." His goalscoring prowess attracted attention from bigger clubs, and his ambition was clear. He expressed a desire to play in the First Division.

In 1969, Wolverhampton Wanderers paid £60,000 to secure his transfer. The move came during Lol Morgan's tenure as Norwich manager. Curran recalled a key conversation, stating, "He said 'If I can double your wages, will you stay?' I said yes, because I loved it at Norwich." the club's board accepted what they considered a good offer from Wolves. After leaving Norwich, Curran played for Oxford United, Bolton Wanderers, and had a second spell at Oxford. He also won five caps for Scotland before a knee injury forced his retirement in 1979.

Life after football saw him move into business. He ran a hotel in Lanarkshire with his brother Ronald and owned several pubs in Oxfordshire and London. After a brief six-month retirement in 2005, he took a job as a supervisor at Oxford's Thornhill park-and-ride service, a role he held for many years.

The news of Curran's passing comes as the modern-day Norwich side handles a challenging start to the 2026-27 Championship season. The team currently sits 20th in the standings, with three points from four games. Their recent form reads LWLL, having scored five goals but conceded seven. They are seven points behind early leaders Swansea City. Manager David Wagner is also dealing with several absentees, including Ali Ahmed, Jovon Makama, Lucien Mahovo, Mirko Topić, and Paris Maghoma, all listed on the club's injuries page. The focus now turns to improving that form in the next fixture, a home match against Birmingham City on September 9th.
